Gear

aaroncrider (03/18/07 17:51:44)   Tag: default
I get asked a lot about the gear I use so I thought I would post a bulletin. When it comes to gear for me the company I really rely on is Yamaha. I'm a piano player and there is just not another product that I have found that gives you the feel and sound of a piano like Yamaha does. My board of choice is the new CP 300. I also own a P200 and P250, but Yamaha really raised the bar with the CP 300. Yamaha added two features that I love. First is the layer faders. This feature allows you to easily add a pad or strings to your piano at a precise level. Really cool. Secondly Yamaha added XLR out. This is a feature I have been waiting for for years. This totally eliminates direct boxes and adapters. Awesome.
Secondly I run a Motif rack ES with my CP 300. The Motif is packed with tone banks that rock. Pads, strings, anything you need. It also is a lifesaver on the road when I don't have the CP 300. The Motif has great pianos that can make any midi keyboard sound great. I rack the motif in an SKB ATA flight case for protection.
Now here is where your sound is really made. STEREO! Keyboards and keyboard racks are stereo instruments. I cant tell you how many venues I play in where they look at me like I'm crazy when I say the word stereo. Running a CP 300 mono is like running a Strat direct through a solid state amp. It just doesn't sound good. Yes you will use more than one channel on your mixer, but it's worth it. It's easy to. First make sure your house cabinets are in stereo then pick two side by side channels for each board/rack. Go out of your L mono out into your left channel on your board and pan the channel left. Do the same with your R out and pan the channel on your board Right. Stereo! Now if your running boards plus racks like me and space on your mixer is an issue check this out. I recently started using the ARTcessories Power Mix III. This is an awesome three channel mixer the size of a direct box that allows you to run 3 stereo instruments out one stereo out. In other words I can run a keyboard and 2 racks but only take 2 channels on the main mixer. The way I do it is I run my CP 300 directly into the Power Mix III. Secondly I run my Motif into my Boss FV-300L stereo volume pedal and then out into the Power Mix III. The volume pedal allows me to seamlessly bring in layers when and where I want. I make all the connections with George L's cables. On your house mixer your right and left channel settings should be exact, except for the pan L and R.
Now for vocals. I use the Sure Beta 87 Cardioid Condenser mic. This mic is great. It's really clear and just packs a punch. When I started using this mic my engineer noticed that he had to do less eqing at the board. We also add texture to my voice with the TC Electronic D-Two Multi-Tap Delay, and the TC Electronic M350 Reverb and Effects Processor.
For my monitor mix I use the FutureSonics Ear Monitors. These are actual ear molds with high fidelity speakers and MG4 bass drivers. These things absolutely rock. I power them with the Shure PSM 600 Wireless Personal Monitor System and the Aviom personal monitor system. I'll do another bulletin soon on in-ear monitoring with some tips we have come across.
Well that's what I use.
