Biography

Raised on the rich musical heritage of Mississippi, Shane’s musical journey began the moment he was born. He was born in the heart of the delta, Cleveland, Mississippi, an area known as home for many legendary artists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters and the great Robert Johnson. “Growing up in an area like this, you can’t help but be influenced by the music,” he says. Shane began playing guitar at the tender age of 5 and cut his teeth on the likes of Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash and Credence Clearwater Revival. “My dad’s favorite music was that of the 50’s and 60’s so, when I first started playing the guitar that was the first type of music I learned.” When he was 6, the family packed up and moved to northeast Mississippi to a little town called Booneville. He quickly saw the difference in things such as culture and especially music even at his young age. “Looking back it’s hard to imagine how different the people, culture and the music changed in just a three hour drive.” Shane was just 30 miles north of Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley. Bluegrass and country music were more prevalent in this part of the state and without hesitation; Shane quickly immersed himself in it. “It didn’t really matter to me what kind of music it was. Just as long as it had a guitar in it.” After spending ten years in Nashville as a session player, playing guitar for artists such as SheDaisy, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Linda Davis, Shannon Brown, Rebecca St. James, LaRue, Christian music pioneer David Huff (David and The Giants) and world renown worship leader, Scott Riggan, he now lives in Charlotte, NC where he serves as the Director of Worship for Uptown Church. "I love working in the church. I love writing songs for the church. All those years of playing and writing, I feel, was God's way of preparing me to be a worship leader and develop others." His musical style and lyrical composition showcases his versatility and wide range of talent. After writing for Randy Cox at Sony Music and for Pamplin Music Publishing, Shane developed his talents as a prolific songwriter of rich music, ranging from beautiful ballads such as Come As You Are and Sovereignty to the anthems of Miracle and According to Love. Long time producer, songwriter and president of Menace Music, Dennis Dearing, says this about Shane; “From his exquisite vocal range and beautiful melodies to his fluid guitar playing, Shane is one of the most likeable, well-rounded artists whose stage presence captures every audience. Without a doubt he is one of the best artists I have ever had the privilege of working with”. Shane describes his music as an eclectic mix of influences from Bill Monroe to Cold Play. One listen to his songs and it’s very evident what the most important element in songwriting for Shane is, as he so aptly puts it. “I want my songs to just ooze doctrine and theology.” He also adds, “Lyrics and music are so incredibly important, but if no one understands what you are saying, or if what you are saying is watered down, they mean nothing. My mission, pure and simple, is to write about these truths found only in the gospel and how the love, grace and mercy of God miraculously saves our lives. For me, a wretched sinner, that’s truth, that’s all there is.”
